Tours in Gothenburg, Sweden: information for travelers

Gothenburg is located in the southwestern part of Sweden. It is regularly visited by tourists who find beautiful northern nature and interesting sights here.

Gothenburg has a rich history, but it gained a truly great significance at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries. The then location of the borders of the Swedish state made it a strategically important place - from the coast it was possible to control a small but extremely significant water area between Denmark and Norway.

For a comfortable trip, many tourists prefer to use car rental services in Sweden. The average cost of renting a car in Stockholm is 20 euros per day.

In the place of Gothenburg in the Middle Ages there was a small fishing village, which was of no strategic interest to anyone. However, in 1621, the then King of Sweden, Gustavus Adolf, ordered the construction of a large city with a powerful port in its place.

Thus, we can assume that Gothenburg in its modern form was founded at the beginning of the 17th century. Interestingly, the Dutch were invited to develop the architectural ensemble of the new city.

That is why this city has an unusual architecture for Sweden. In many ways, Gothenburg is similar in architecture to Amsterdam. Also in the city you will find beautiful canals that make it look like one of the settlements in the Netherlands. In addition, the Dutch not only designed Gothenburg - in the first decades after its development, they also had considerable political power there.

Sweden finally gained complete control over Gothenburg only in the middle of the 17th century, after the death of the last Dutch consul. It is also interesting that during these years the official language there was exactly Dutch, despite the fact that formally the city was part of Sweden.

During the 17th century, Gothenburg was gradually completed, in particular, more and more new districts were built there. In addition, it was then that powerful fortress walls were built there, which are partially preserved to this day.

For many years, and especially in the 18th century, one of the most common occupations of the locals was fishing. However, in the middle of the century, the Swedish East India Company was founded, after which many people from this city began to conduct successful trade with various Asian countries.

This was facilitated by the geographical location of the city - the harbor was constantly crowded with merchant ships, and it was through this port that Sweden traded with various countries of the world.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, industry began to actively develop in Gothenburg, many industries of which, however, received the most active development only in the next, 20th century.

Also, over the course of a century, the population grew 10 times from 13,000 people in 1800 to 130,000 in 1900. Gothenburg and its environs are characterized by a typical oceanic climate. In general, the local climate is very mild and favorable at any time of the year.
