The magnificent architecture of Prague

Over the centuries, the Czech capital has been built up and added to its possessions more and more masterpieces of architecture, presented in the most beautiful styles of all time: 1. Gothic; 2. Baroque; 3. Romanism.

The impregnability of the Romanesque style

During the formation of Prague, all buildings were built in order to give the structure strength and reliability, as well as inaccessibility to the fortress walls, striking in thickness. The very first buildings on this land were created by ancient architects and builders, using the simplicity and roundness of fortifications in the Romanesque style, called Burgundian in those days. Rotundas, or otherwise say chapels with a small entrance and small windows, are considered the oldest buildings and were intended for church services. Rather large-scale and capacious structures, similar to fortresses, amaze with their impregnable outlines and fortified appearance, very suitable for those times when enemy invasions were frequent, and the construction had one goal - to increase defense capability. St. George Basilica is a very old church, built in the Early Middle Ages and undergone repeated restoration of the walls, facades and interior. Over time, the facades were supplemented with baroque elements - bas-reliefs and statues. The towers of the basilica have been preserved in excellent condition and have not lost their originality to this day.

Gothic mysticism
Without a doubt, the Gothic style is the most beautiful and multifaceted type of ancient architecture, and its features are distinguished by perfection and clarity of lines. Gothic cathedrals, churches, basilicas, palaces - their appearance is shocking with luxurious facades, majestic towers with spiers, beautifully designed openwork ornaments, luxurious interiors, lancet vaults, multi-colored mosaic and arched stained-glass windows. The buildings themselves seem to stretch upward and amaze with the height of the pointed spiers cutting through the space. The Gothic style first appeared in France and gradually spread throughout Central Europe. St. Vitus Cathedral is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and this building is famous for its extraordinarily beautiful stained-glass windows decorated with multi-colored mosaics, as well as pointed towers with elongated arched windows.

The splendor of the baroque

Mystical Gothic slightly weakened its power and very pleasant changes took place in architecture in the form of elements of the Baroque style, which came from Italy and was so loved by the Czechs for its splendor and grandiosity. The pomp of the Baroque was added to the asceticism of the Gothic, and the buildings began to be decorated in smooth outlines with skillful bas-reliefs, intricate frescoes and graceful sculptures, luxurious balconies and portals from a number of statues.Prague has been the capital of the Czech Republic for a millennium and cannot be compared with any European city in terms of the splendor of ancient buildings and the number of museums, palaces and churches. Prague landscapes amaze with an abundance of sights and you can admire them for hours.
